ADHD overwhelm is the intense mental, emotional, and sensory overload that can happen when demands exceed your brain’s capacity to organise, prioritise, and respond. It’s not just “having too much to do”—it’s a full-body experience that can leave you feeling stuck, scattered, or completely shut down.
For many people with ADHD, overwhelm builds quietly. Tasks pile up, decisions feel harder, and the mental load increases until everything starts to feel urgent at once. What might look like procrastination from the outside is often a nervous system that has reached its limit.
ADHD overwhelm can show up in different ways, including:
At its core, overwhelm is not about a lack of effort, it’s about cognitive and emotional load exceeding capacity.
ADHD affects executive functioning—the brain processes responsible for planning, organising, prioritising, and regulating attention. When these systems are under strain, even everyday demands can become overwhelming.
Contributing factors often include:
Over time, repeated experiences of overwhelm can lead to cycles of avoidance, self-criticism, and exhaustion.
ADHD overwhelm therapy is not about forcing productivity or imposing rigid systems. Instead, it focuses on understanding how your brain works and building strategies that are realistic, flexible, and supportive.
In our work together, we may focus on:
This is about finding approaches that actually fit your life, not adding more pressure.
My approach is grounded in neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed practice. ADHD is not treated as a deficit to correct, but as a different way of processing the world.
Together, we work towards:
Overwhelm doesn’t mean you’re failing, it means your system needs something different.
Therapy offers a space to figure out what that is, at your pace.
Would you like a version of this that includes practical coping tools or keeps it more reflective and therapeutic in tone?
