Therapy for Autistic Burn Out
Autistic burnout is a state of deep physical, emotional, and cognitive exhaustion that many autistic people experience after prolonged periods of stress, masking, or navigating environments that don’t meet their needs. It’s not simply “feeling tired” or typical stress it can impact your ability to function day-to-day, affecting speech, executive functioning, sensory tolerance, and emotional regulation.
For many people, autistic burnout develops gradually. You might have spent months or years pushing through overwhelming environments, trying to meet expectations, or masking your natural ways of being. Eventually, the nervous system becomes overloaded, and burnout sets in as a protective response.
What autistic burnout can feel like
Autistic burnout can look different for everyone, but common experiences include:
- Chronic exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest
- Increased sensory sensitivity (light, sound, touch becoming harder to tolerate)
- Difficulty with communication, including finding words or speaking
- Loss of skills or reduced ability to manage daily tasks
- Heightened anxiety, shutdowns, or meltdowns
- A strong need to withdraw or reduce demands
This can feel confusing and sometimes frightening especially if you’re used to coping in certain ways and suddenly those strategies no longer work.
Why burnout happens
Autistic burnout is often the result of a mismatch between you and your environment. This can include:
- Long-term masking or camouflaging
- High levels of social or workplace demands
- Sensory overload without adequate recovery time
- Lack of understanding or support from others
- Internal pressure to “keep up” or meet neurotypical expectations
Burnout is not a failure, it’s a signal. It reflects how much your system has been holding, often without enough support or accommodation.
How therapy can help
Therapy for autistic burn out is not about pushing you to “get back to normal.” Instead, it focuses on helping you recover in a way that understands and works with your neurotype and supports long-term wellbeing.

- Understanding your burnout and how it developed
- Reducing overwhelm and stabilising your nervous system
- Rebuilding energy at a pace that feels safe and sustainable
- Identifying and reducing masking where it no longer serves you
- Exploring your sensory, emotional, and cognitive needs
- Creating a life that works with your neurology, not against it

My approach is grounded in neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed practice. Autism is not something to be fixed. Burnout is a response to chronic strain and unmet needs.

Recovery from burnout is about building a way of living that no longer requires you to constantly override yourself.
